Glad to hear people outside Commieland are enjoying it too. It is awesome. How, underneath that self-righteous narrator, you can just see the eye-rolls. They couldn't very well go out and say: oh, the Gestapo is just like our guys at home, aren't they? But it's implied, right there. That's why the Nazis are such nice affable chaps here. Them speaking Russian contributes to the message, too.
Aaaaaah *flail* And then there's this: http://linndechir.livejournal.com/20690.html It's arguably one of the slashiest scenes in the source material. The author of the Stierlitz novels wrote the screenplay himself, y'see, and this...... well. I kid you not. I did not add the slashy stuff. Cross my heart, it was written that way.

Glad you liked it :) *snickers* They definitely did not aim for subtlety. And now I just want to research what the norm for male affection was, in Soviet Era Russia! Along with how homosexuality was considered, too.

You can definitely see the eye-rolls, indeed! It's like "we have to put a tank here, and here, and blow up lots of buildings, just to shut the censors up".

Oh, is that where linndechir's inspiration for the Schallenberg/Heiydrich fic came from? How delightful! That fic is scorching, but strangely tender.

Yep. I squeed to her about the scene, translated it, and she wrote fic for it. I loved it too, somehow, but pssssst ;) I also have written one, set in 1930, it's in gamma stage, read: me being too cowardly to post it. Not even because of the quality of writing, but well, it's Nazi Slash. *aherm*
And you're quite right, the tank shots/building explosions shots are documentary footage, and they were inserted after the censors griped that the film didn't show enough heroism of the Sowjet people or whatever - fact is, they added them post-production, and they weren't planned.
Hm, male affection - there is certainly loads of it, is what I can say. I have grown up in a post-Sowjet country, and both men and women, if they are family OR close friends, are indeed very VERY touchy-feely, compared to Germany anyway. Homosexuals weren't actively pursued either - it simply wasn't talked about. So, if you saw two men kissing, and there was no obvious tongue-involvement, you'd think "friends". Nobody looked twice at men cuddling, either, particularly in war-times. There was no restriction, like, "you shouldn't do that, that could be perceived as gay", simply because, as far as people were concerned, homosexuality did not exist. Or, if you saw a guy sitting on a park bench and knitting, you'd think less of his masculinity, and maybe frown, but you wouldn't think he has sex with other men.
Bit like that...
